“How Can I Prevent Cervical Cancer?”
Cervical cancer is preventable—and early detection saves lives.
A common patient concern: “Do I really need a Pap smear if I feel fine?” The answer is yes.
What Causes Cervical Cancer?
Most cases are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus)—a common sexually transmitted infection. In some women, certain high-risk strains cause cervical cell changes that can lead to cancer over time.
How to Protect Yourself:
• Get regular Pap smears and HPV tests (starting at age 21)
• HPV vaccination (recommended up to age 26, sometimes up to 45)
• Practice safe sex
• Quit smoking, which increases risk
Pap Smear Guidelines:
• Age 21–29: Every 3 years
• Age 30–65: Every 3–5 years (with HPV test)
• Your OB-GYN may recommend more frequent testing if you have risk factors
Cervical cancer doesn’t usually show symptoms early—screening is the only way to catch it before it becomes dangerous.
