How Do I Know If a Breast Lump Is Cancer?

Finding a lump in your breast can be frightening. Many women ask, “Is every lump breast cancer?” The short answer is: Not necessarily—but it should always be checked.

Types of Breast Lumps:

Benign (non-cancerous): Like fibroadenomas or cysts, especially in younger women.
Malignant (cancerous): These often feel hard, irregular, and fixed in place.

Warning Signs to Watch:

A new lump or thickened area
Lump that doesn’t move and is painless
Nipple discharge (especially bloody)
Change in breast size or shape
Skin dimpling or puckering
Inverted nipple or redness

What to Do:

Schedule a clinical breast exam
Your OB-GYN may order a mammogram or ultrasound
If needed, a biopsy will confirm the diagnosis

Bottom Line: Not all lumps are cancer, but early detection is key. Monthly self-exams and routine checkups could save your life.
