Why Are My Periods Irregular

Why Are My Periods Irregular?

Irregular periods are one of the most common reasons women visit an OB-GYN.
Many patients ask, “Is it normal that my periods are not on time every month?”

What Counts as Irregular?

A “normal” menstrual cycle is typically between 21–35 days. Irregular means:

  • Periods come too early or too late
  • Skipping months
  • Very heavy or very light flow
  • Bleeding between periods

Common Causes:

  • Stress or sudden weight changes
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Thyroid issues
  • Perimenopause
  • Birth control use or stopping it suddenly
  • Uterine conditions like fibroids or endometriosis

When to See a Doctor:

  • Skipped periods for 3+ months (and you’re not pregnant)
  • Bleeding that soaks through pads in less than an hour
  • Severe cramps or blood clots
  • Unexplained spotting between periods

Good news: Most causes are treatable once diagnosed. Don’t ignore irregular cycles—it’s your body’s way of telling you something.
